History

Development

Little Boy was developed during the Manhattan Project, the secret American-led wartime program that created the first nuclear weapons. It used a gun-type design built around uranium-235. The project brought together scientists, engineers, military personnel, industrial facilities, and research laboratories across the United States.

Operational Role

On August 6, 1945, Little Boy was carried by the B‑29 Superfortress Enola Gay, commanded by Col. Paul Tibbets. The bomb was released over Hiroshima, Japan, and detonated above the city. It was the first nuclear weapon used in warfare.

The explosion, heat, fires, and radiation devastated Hiroshima. Tens of thousands of people were killed immediately, with many more dying from injuries and radiation exposure. Hiroshima City estimates that approximately 140,000 people had died by the end of 1945, although the exact number remains unknown.

Historical Significance

The bombing of Hiroshima was followed three days later by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, 1945, and formally surrendered on September 2, ending World War II.

Little Boy marked the beginning of the nuclear age. Its use remains the subject of continuing historical, military, ethical, and political debate. The weapon demonstrated unprecedented destructive power while leaving generations to confront the consequences of nuclear warfare.
