History

Development

The CH‑46 Sea Knight was developed as a medium-lift transport helicopter capable of carrying troops and cargo from ships to landing zones. Its tandem-rotor configuration provided the stability and lifting capability needed for demanding military operations. The CH‑46 first flew in August 1962 and entered Marine Corps service in 1964.

Operational Role

The Sea Knight’s primary mission was assault support, transporting Marines directly into and out of combat zones. It also conducted resupply, medical evacuation, search-and-rescue, humanitarian-relief, and tactical-recovery missions. The CH‑46 served during the Vietnam War and later supported operations in Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Historical Significance

Known throughout the Marine Corps as the “Phrog,” the CH‑46 became a trusted symbol of Marine aviation. It served the Corps for more than 50 years before completing its final Marine flight on August 1, 2015. Although replaced by the MV‑22 Osprey, the Sea Knight remains closely connected to the Marines and aircrews who depended on it.
