History

Development

Designed by Lockheed's legendary engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson in the late 1930s, the P-38 Lightning was a radical departure from conventional fighter design. Developed in response to a United States Army Air Corps requirement for a high-altitude interceptor, the twin-engine, twin-boom layout was chosen to accommodate powerful Allison V-1710 engines equipped with turbo-superchargers, resulting in unprecedented speed and climb rates.

Role

The P-38 Lightning served with distinction across multiple theaters of war, most notably in the Pacific and Mediterranean.
