History

Development

The MiG‑29 was developed by the Soviet Mikoyan Design Bureau in response to American fighters such as the F‑15 Eagle and F‑16 Fighting Falcon. Work began during the early 1970s, and the first prototype flew on October 6, 1977. NATO assigned the new aircraft the reporting name “Fulcrum.” Production began in 1982, with deliveries to Soviet frontline aviation units beginning the following year.

Operational Role
